Calgary Chamber of Commerce to play active role in 2010 municipal election
Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:00

The 2010 municipal election in Calgary is proving to be one of the most exciting races in a decade, with a number of excellent, high profile candidates vying for the city’s top job.

Today the Calgary Chamber of Commerce announced two major initiatives to ensure the business community plays an active role in deciding our city’s future. Don’t be surprised to hear more about these in your local paper or on your favourite radio station in the coming days.

GreatCalgary.ca website launch

We have launched our GreatCalgary.ca website, an initiative to get Calgarians talking about ways to make our city even greater. Leading up to the election we aim to profile key issues, and provide ideas and options so that citizens are prepared to make the best, informed choice on election day, October 18.

Starting September 20 we will release a daily Policy Action Brief to discuss issues in more depth and offer practical solutions. GreatCalgary.ca will also be a chance to learn more about Mayoral Candidates with results of a survey posted closer to election day.

October 5 Candidates Forum – Live webcast

The Calgary Chamber of Commerce and SAIT will host a 2010 Mayoral Candidates Forum on the evening of October 5th. The Chamber of Commerce will act as host and organizer of the forum, with SAIT, as Venue Partner, providing the facility and much of the technology required. The event will also be live webcast.

The Chamber recognizes what’s good for the community is good for businesses and this forum will address issues relevant to the broader Calgary community. As part of our engagement, the Chamber and SAIT are seeking a group of “Community Partners” to support the forum, market the event to their members, engage the wider community, and attend the event. Numbering up to 20, Community Partners will be from a broad cross-section of the city representing the community of business, including not-for-profit groups and associations representing business, arts, voluntary organizations, educational institutions, social agencies and others. To date, the Chamber is pleased to be partnering with the Calgary Downtown Association, the Mustard Seed, and the Building Owners and Managers Association, among others.

Your Participation

The success of this initiative and the quality of discussion with candidates will be a result of your active participation. We welcome your thoughts and opinions.

Together we can make Calgary even greater.

Sincerely,
